Florida's Jon Sumrall faults offense after 27-8 loss to Georgia, leaves QB job open

Four turnovers, 54 rushing yards and a quarterback switch: Jon Sumrall blamed the whole Florida offense for the 27-8 loss to Georgia, with Oklahoma next.

After Saturday's 27-8 loss to Georgia in Atlanta, Florida coach Jon Sumrall did not single out one player. He said the whole offense failed: the line didn't block, receivers lined up wrong and ran the wrong routes, and the quarterbacks didn't hold up. He also would not say who will start at quarterback against Oklahoma.

Roundtable Sports reported the damage. Florida turned the ball over four times and was flagged eight times for 78 yards. It ran 28 times for 54 yards, and Georgia sacked its quarterbacks four times. Sumrall said he "felt bad" at times for Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. because poor blocking made it unfair to judge either one. Speaking to reporters after the game, he apologized to Florida fans, according to ClutchPoints. He said they had every right to be angry: "They should be pissed off. I hope they are."

Philo started after missing time with a shoulder injury. He threw two interceptions and passed for 26 yards before Sumrall replaced him in the second quarter. Sumrall said the first pick was a bad decision by Philo and the second bounced off a receiver's hands. Jones threw for 172 yards with an interception, lost a fumble on a strip-sack that Georgia returned for a touchdown, and ended the shutout with a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter. Florida trailed 24-0 at halftime.

Jones led the 27-24 upset at Texas two weeks earlier, but he is not fully healthy. Sumrall would not name the injury. He said it kept Jones from running play-action and run-action plays at full speed, and the Associated Press reported it could require offseason surgery. Sumrall told the AP that Philo had the better week of practice. He did not name a Week 10 starter.

What it means for Oklahoma

Florida is 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the SEC. Its offense has fallen off sharply. The Gators scored 214 points in their first four games, an average of 53.5, which included 52 against Ole Miss. In the four games since, they have scored 71 points, or under 18 a game. That stretch includes losses of 45-17 at Missouri, 38-19 to South Carolina and Saturday's 27-8 defeat. The Texas win is the only one in that run, and the offense Sumrall described on Saturday will not win many SEC games.

Florida hosts Oklahoma on November 7 on SEC Network. The Sooners already have a lopsided loss on their record: Georgia beat them 41-13.

Florida is still favored on the board for the game. Novig has the Gators at -186 to win. The best price on Florida is -183 at Kalshi, so the venues barely differ on that side. They differ more on Oklahoma: Novig lists the Sooners at +150, while FanDuel has the best price at +172. The spread runs from Florida -4.5 at DraftKings to Oklahoma +6.5 at FanDuel. The total sits between 47.5 and 48.5, and sportsbook hold on the moneyline is between 4.2% and 4.6%.

A 4.5- to 6.5-point margin is not much room for a team that just turned the ball over four times. The quarterback decision will shape the week. Jones is the healthier option only if his injury lets him run the whole offense. Otherwise Florida goes back to Philo after a two-interception start. Either way, Sumrall has said the problems go beyond the quarterback.
