Beating Alabama cost Tennessee $500,000. The Southeastern Conference fined the school that amount on Sunday after fans poured onto the field at Neyland Stadium following the Volunteers' 26-10 win over the then-No. 6 Crimson Tide, ESPN reported, using Associated Press reporting.

Under league rules, the money goes to Alabama. The SEC's policy on access to competition areas carries a $500,000 penalty in every sport, and in conference games the opposing school collects it. The policy lets schools set up procedures for fans to celebrate on the field, but only after visiting personnel and game officials have left the field safely. WVLT reported that thousands of fans took part. It was Tennessee's third straight home win over Alabama.

Commissioner Greg Sankey can cut the fine to $100,000 if a school shows it made a full effort to stop the rush, that only a few people got onto the field and that there was little contact with the visiting team. ESPN reported that none of that applied in Knoxville. According to ESPN, this was the 11th straight field storming after an Alabama road loss, a streak that goes back to Auburn in 2013. Tennessee paid for this one, but the fine has no effect on the result or the standings.

What it means for Saturday

The fine does not change much for the Volunteers on the field. At 6-1, Tennessee has won three straight SEC games: 24-14 over Auburn, 24-17 at Arkansas and now Alabama. Its only loss was 20-17 to then-No. 1 Texas. The defense has carried the team, giving up 103 points in seven games, or 14.7 per game, and no more than 20 in any of them. The offense scores 33.4 a game, though that average leans on three non-conference blowouts.

Tennessee goes to South Carolina on Saturday, October 24 (ESPN), and the board makes the Gamecocks the home favorite even after the Alabama win. Across 11 venues, South Carolina is favored at -127 on Novig's moneyline, and DraftKings has the best price at -122. Tennessee is +120 on Novig. On the spread, Novig lists South Carolina -2.5, while BetMGM is the outlier at -2. The total sits at 50.5 on Novig and 51 at Fanatics. The venues are close together. Sportsbook hold runs from 4.0% to 6.3% on the moneyline. The full board has every price.

Alabama gets the $500,000, but the bigger problem is its record. The Tide are 5-2 after losing back-to-back games, 20-17 to Georgia and now in Knoxville, and they scored 27 points across those two after averaging more than 49 in the first five. Texas A&M visits Tuscaloosa on Saturday (ABC), and the board still shows confidence in Alabama: the Tide are favored at -590 on Novig and by 14.5 points, with the total at 50.5.
