The SEC fined South Carolina $500,000 on Sunday after Gamecocks fans poured onto the field at Williams-Brice Stadium following Saturday's 27-24 win over No. 11 Tennessee. Malik Orsan won it with a 48-yard field goal as time expired, and the crowd came over the hedges right after the kick. The conference found that the celebration broke its access-to-competition-area policy, On3 reported.

Because this was a conference game, the money goes to the opponent. That means Tennessee gets back exactly what it paid a week earlier. The league fined the Volunteers $500,000 after their fans stormed Neyland Stadium following a 26-10 win over Alabama. So the Vols lost $500,000 one Saturday and got it back the next, as The Associated Press noted. The AP also reported that Commissioner Greg Sankey can cut the fine to $100,000 if South Carolina shows it made a full effort to stop the rush, that few people got onto the field and that there was little contact with the visiting team.

That last condition could be hard to meet. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that video taken after the game showed Tennessee players in altercations during the rush. Linebacker Jeremiah Telander appeared to throw a punch at a South Carolina player. Defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs appeared to shove a fan who was running off with Tennessee equipment. The paper also explained how the penalty has changed. The SEC's 2004 policy raised the fine with each offense, starting at $100,000, but Sankey moved in 2025 to a flat $500,000 for every violation. The AP reported that South Carolina was one of at least four schools whose fans rushed the field Saturday, and it drew the largest fine.

What it means for Saturday at Oklahoma

The fine doesn't change anything on the field, but it caps the best two weeks of South Carolina's season. The Gamecocks are 4-3 and 2-3 in the SEC. They have won back-to-back games over ranked teams, 38-19 at No. 16 Florida and now Tennessee. Before that they lost three straight: 41-34 to Mississippi State, 49-18 at No. 8 Alabama and 35-34 to No. 24 Kentucky. They have scored 36.1 points per game and allowed 25.3. They have the points to keep pace with most teams but haven't been consistent.

The Gamecocks travel to Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 31, on SEC Network. On this site's board, which tracks 11 venues, the Sooners are favored. Novig lists Oklahoma at -174 on the moneyline and South Carolina at +170. Polymarket has the best South Carolina price at +173, so the venues are close on the underdog. Novig's spread is Oklahoma -5.5 at -104. FanDuel lists Oklahoma at -4.5 for -114, the best price on the Sooners. Novig sets the total at 44.5, and Fanatics has 44. Sportsbook hold ranges from 3.6% to 6.9% on the moneyline.

Tennessee is 6-2 and 3-2 in the SEC. The Vols have an open week before No. 9 Kentucky visits Neyland Stadium on Nov. 7. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that coach Josh Heupel's next press conference is set for Oct. 28, and he will likely be asked about the postgame altercations.
