Texas A&M goes to Tuscaloosa this week with a pass defense that has gone from a problem to a strength in about a month. Aggies Wire reports that the Aggies' secondary ranks 10th nationally in passing yards allowed entering Week 8. Only Oklahoma and Tennessee rank higher among SEC teams.

The improvement came quickly. Aggies Wire noted that the secondary gave up too many blown coverages early in conference play, in a home loss to Kentucky and a road loss at LSU. After that, Mike Elko gave defensive play-calling duties to first-year coordinator Lyle Hemphill. The outlet credits cornerback Dezz Ricks with near-flawless coverage since the LSU game, and says Tawfiq Byard's return has improved tackling in space. Even in the 27-6 loss at Missouri, the Aggies held quarterback Austin Simmons to 147 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The week's most important matchup may come before the ball is thrown. Aggies Wire called A&M's pass rush underwhelming, but Alabama's protection has been worse. The Tide have given up an average of three sacks per game, which ranks 129th nationally. Field Level Media reported that the line allowed nine sacks across Alabama's recent slide. If the Aggies can get to quarterback Keelon Russell, a secondary that is covering well has a better chance to force turnovers.

What it means for Saturday

The season lines show two teams headed in different directions on offense. In its first five games, Alabama averaged nearly 50 points and topped 45 points five straight times. Over the last two weeks it has scored 27 points total, in a 20-17 home loss to Georgia and a 26-10 loss at Tennessee. Field Level Media noted that losing back-to-back games puts the 5-2 Tide somewhere the program has not been in nearly two decades.

Texas A&M (4-3) has its own problem: road scoring. The Aggies scored 6 points at LSU and 6 points at Missouri, and Saturday is their third road game. At home they have averaged nearly 39 points per game, and they are coming off a 41-0 win over The Citadel. Across seven games, A&M has allowed about 17 points per game, with two shutouts.

The market still trusts Alabama's track record more than its last two games. On this site's board, Alabama is a 13.5-point favorite. Novig has the Tide at -525 on the moneyline and Texas A&M at +488. The best Aggies price is +510 at Polymarket. On the spread, Novig lists Texas A&M +13.5 at +106. BetRivers offers the extra half point at +14.5, priced at -122. Alabama -13.5 is -113 at Novig and -109 at Pinnacle. The total is 50.5 at Novig, with the over at -104 and the under at -108. BetRivers has 50 with the over at -117. Sportsbook hold on the spread ranges from 3.8% to 6.7% across the 12 venues, so prices differ meaningfully from one venue to the next.

A total near 50 suggests the market expects Alabama's offense to recover somewhat. The Aggies' coverage numbers and Alabama's sack totals point the other way. Whether Hemphill's defense can carry that improvement onto the road will likely decide whether A&M stays inside two touchdowns. Kickoff is Saturday on ABC.
