Florida went into Friday expecting its most dangerous playmaker back. By the end of the day it couldn't be sure. Sophomore receiver Vernell Brown III was downgraded to questionable on the SEC's Friday availability report, ClutchPoints reported. He had been listed as probable on both Wednesday and Thursday, ahead of Saturday's game against No. 3 Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Brown hurt his knee in the first half of the Sept. 26 win over Ole Miss and has missed the three games since. The Orlando Sentinel wrote that his absence "has been noticeable," and the numbers back that up. In Florida's 4-0 start, Brown led the team with 17 catches and 271 receiving yards. He also scored four touchdowns, two of them on punt returns. The Gators put up 96 points in their SEC wins over Auburn and Ole Miss. In the three games without him, they have scored 63 points and gone 1-2.

The rest of the receiver room is unsettled too. Bailey Stockton, who has 27 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns while playing in all seven games, was moved up from doubtful to questionable with a left ankle injury. The quarterback news is better. Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. were both upgraded to probable, and Philo is expected to start after a right shoulder injury kept him out of the Texas game. Running back Duke Clark (left ankle) and linebacker Jaden Robinson have been ruled out, so sophomore Ty Jackson should see more snaps at linebacker. The final availability report comes out 90 minutes before the 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

What it means for Saturday

The 17th-ranked Gators are 5-2, and their season has swung from week to week. They won their first four, then lost 45-17 at Missouri and 38-19 at home to South Carolina, the two worst offensive outings of their season, both without Brown. Last week they won 27-24 at No. 7 Texas with Jones at quarterback. Georgia is 6-1. The Bulldogs went 6-0 with a 20-17 win at Alabama, then lost 27-24 at home to Auburn last week. They have held four of seven opponents to 17 points or fewer.

The board on our game page reflects that gap. Georgia is favored by 11.5 at Novig, priced at -104, and its moneyline there is -400. Florida's moneyline at Novig is +388. The widest spread anywhere is Hard Rock Bet's Florida +12.5 at -110, a full point more than Novig's +11.5 at -100. The total sits at 56.5 at Novig, and BetRivers has the highest number at 57, with the under at -114. Across the 12 venues, sportsbook hold runs from 3.4% to 7.0% on the spread.

Those numbers are set without knowing whether Brown plays. If he's cleared, Florida gets back the speed in space and the punt-return threat that powered its best scoring days. If he isn't, the Gators will be relying on a banged-up receiver group and a quarterback coming back from a shoulder injury against a Georgia defense coming off its first loss.
