Georgia won 20-17 at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday because it controlled the ball and finished the game on its own terms. The Bulldogs ran for 206 yards and held possession for 33:28. Peyton Woodring's 23-yard field goal with 5:25 left broke a 17-17 tie, and Alabama did not score again.

No. 2 Georgia moves to 6-0. No. 6 Alabama falls to 5-1 with its first loss of the season.

How it was won

Woodring opened the scoring with a 43-yard field goal at 3:25 of the first quarter. Georgia stretched the lead to 10-0 at 7:09 of the second when Gunner Stockton found London Humphreys for a 20-yard touchdown.

Alabama answered fast. Keelon Russell hit Marshall Pritchett for 22 yards at 5:49, and EJ Crowell scored from 1 yard out as the half expired. Conor Talty converted both kicks, and Alabama went to the locker room ahead 14-10.

Georgia took the lead back at 10:38 of the third quarter on Stockton's 14-yard run. Talty tied it at 17 with a 39-yard field goal at 5:07. The rest of the third and most of the fourth belonged to the defenses until Woodring's short kick decided it.

Stockton was efficient: 18 of 22 for 249 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The longer gains came in single shots, including Jaden Reddell's 53-yard catch, his only reception. Craig Dandridge caught four passes for 45 yards.

The rushing split did the heavier work. Dwight Phillips Jr. carried 17 times for 120 yards, and Bo Walker added 69 on 10 carries. Georgia converted 7 of 13 third downs and finished with 455 total yards and 21 first downs.

Alabama's numbers were not far behind: 346 yards, 17 first downs, 6 of 13 on third down. Trae'shawn Brown ran 9 times for 90 yards, and Russell added 41 rushing yards on 9 carries. Through the air, Russell completed 16 of 30 for 185 yards and the Pritchett touchdown. Ryan Coleman-Williams led the receivers with three catches for 39 yards, and Lotzeir Brooks had two for 37.

Each side turned it over once. The gap came in volume: Georgia ran more plays, held the ball nearly seven minutes longer and turned its final real possession into points.

Against the number

Alabama closed as a 2.5-point favorite at home. Georgia covered by winning outright, and anyone holding the Bulldogs at +105 on the moneyline was paid at better than even money. Alabama closed at -125.

The total closed at 51.5. With 37 points scored, the under came in by 14.5. That number was set against two offenses that had been piling up points: Georgia had scored at least 38 in each of its first five games, and Alabama had not scored fewer than 45 all season. Neither came close here, and the scoreless stretch between Talty's tying kick and Woodring's go-ahead field goal settled it.

What's next

Georgia returns home on Saturday, October 17, to face Auburn on ESPN. The Bulldogs have won all six games, and this was their first one decided by fewer than 24 points.

Alabama goes on the road the same day to play No. 14 Tennessee on ABC. The Tide came into this game having won five straight, including a 56-23 result at Mississippi State, and now face a ranked opponent away from home a week after losing one at Bryant-Denny.
