Miami Hurricanes in the NFL: Kinchens and Rousseau make the big plays in Bills-Rams overtime
Former Miami Hurricanes Kam Kinchens and Greg Rousseau made the key defensive plays in Bills-Rams overtime, and Calais Campbell set an NFL record.

Two former Miami Hurricanes, one on each side, made the plays that decided overtime between the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium. Rams safety Kam Kinchens ran down a receiver who looked gone for a touchdown. A few snaps later, Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau blocked the field goal that would have won it for Los Angeles.
Shea McDonald laid out the sequence in CaneSport's weekly Canes in the NFL recap on On3. Midway through the extra period, Buffalo receiver Khalil Shakir got loose over the middle and had open field in front of him, reaching about 21.9 mph. Kinchens slid in the draft partly because of questions about his speed. He chased Shakir across the field, hit roughly 21.5 mph and tripped him up by the shoelaces with a diving tackle. It was the last of his six tackles that night. One play later the Rams forced a fumble, and Buffalo never got a scoring chance out of the drive.
The Rams then moved into range for a 48-yard attempt by Harrison Mevis. Rousseau blocked it. That was nearly all he did on the stat sheet, which shows a single tackle. Buffalo lined up for the winning kick a few plays later. McDonald called the game an "early candidate for Game of the Year."
The biggest milestone of the week belonged to Calais Campbell. He now holds the NFL record for career games played by a defensive lineman. Baltimore beat Atlanta without Lamar Jackson, and Campbell played on what would have been his late mother's birthday. That was the 283rd game of his career.
No. 10 pick Francis Mauigoa had a clean game for the New York Giants in their tie with Washington, according to the recap. He was charged with nothing across 89 blocking snaps, a week after an uneven outing against Arizona. He has played every snap through five weeks.
Cam Ward's week was much harder. The Titans quarterback threw for 170 yards with an interception, and Tennessee scored only 3 points against a Houston defense that had been struggling. He was sacked four times and spent much of the day running from pressure. CaneSport argued that writing him off this early would be a mistake. His career record is now 3-19.
In Tampa Bay's upset of Dallas, cornerback Keionte Scott made seven tackles, second-most on the team. He broke up several passes and nearly had his first interception. Fellow Buccaneers rookie Reuben Bain dropped into coverage on about a third of his snaps. The recap argued that role keeps him away from what he does best.
On the Philadelphia line, Markel Bell has moved into a much bigger job since Lane Johnson retired. He showed both his rawness and his promise against Jacksonville's pass rush. Leonard Taylor III sacked Kirk Cousins during New England's rout of Las Vegas. It was his first sack of the season, and he is still competing for snaps in a deep defensive tackle group.
