Ole Miss

For 37 minutes this was a game. Auburn trailed by two points with 6:20 left in the third quarter after Byrum Brown's 7-yard touchdown run. Then Ole Miss scored on its next four possessions, 28 points in a row, and turned a tight game into a 45-15 win at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Trinidad Chambliss accounted for three of those four touchdowns. Ole Miss converted 13 of 16 third downs. Auburn never got the ball back within one score.

Ole Miss moves to 6-2. Auburn falls to 4-4.

How it was won

Neither team scored in the first quarter. W. Echoles opened the scoring with a 1-yard run at 14:57 of the second, and L. Carneiro's kick made it 7-0. Auburn answered at 7:59 when Brown found Chas Nimrod for 21 yards, but the extra point was blocked, leaving it 7-6.

Shekai Mills-Knight scored from 1 yard at 2:26 for a 14-6 lead. A. McPherson's 29-yard field goal with five seconds left in the half cut it to 14-9.

Carneiro added a 20-yard field goal at 9:46 of the third for 17-9. Brown's 7-yard run at 6:20 made it 17-15, but the two-point try failed, and that was as close as Auburn got.

From there it was all Ole Miss:

  • Q3 3:25: Chambliss runs 26 yards for a touchdown, 24-15.
  • Q4 12:53: Chambliss to C. Cunningham for 6 yards, 31-15.
  • Q4 10:23: Chambliss to Horatio Fields for 28 yards, 38-15.
  • Q4 3:27: D. Knight runs 17 yards for a touchdown, 45-15.

Chambliss finished 22 of 34 for 263 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and added 65 rushing yards and a score on seven carries. Mills-Knight ran 16 times for 71 yards. Fields caught six passes for 73 yards and Deuce Alexander had five for 59.

Ole Miss outgained Auburn 487 to 312 and won the ground game 224 to 63. It had 31 first downs to Auburn's 24 and held the ball for 32:38.

Brown went 25 of 38 for 195 yards and a touchdown. Nimrod and DeShawn Spencer each caught four passes for 62 yards. Jeremiah Cobb led Auburn's rushers with 35 yards on seven carries. Auburn was 7 of 14 on third down and turned it over twice; Ole Miss turned it over once.

Against the number

Ole Miss closed as a 10.5-point favorite and won by 30, a comfortable cover. For most of the third quarter the price looked in danger, with Auburn inside a field goal.

The total closed at 58.5 and the game finished with 60 points, over. That one came late: it stood at 53 after Fields' touchdown, and Knight's 17-yard run at 3:27 of the fourth carried it past the number.

The moneylines closed at Auburn +320 and Ole Miss -410.
