Oklahoma gained 238 yards and did not throw a touchdown pass, and still beat No. 1 Texas 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. The Sooners scored 14 points without their offense on the field, a blocked punt return and an interception return. Tate Sandell finished it with a 47-yard field goal as time expired.

Texas outgained Oklahoma 382 to 238 and lost the turnover count 2-0. That gap, plus a 3-of-14 day on third down, was the game.

How it was won

Texas led for most of the first half. Arch Manning hit Cam Coleman for a 41-yard touchdown at 6:56 of the first quarter, and Gianni Spetic's kick made it 7-0.

Oklahoma's first points came from its punt block unit. Dakoda Fields returned a blocked punt 0 yards for a touchdown at 14:11 of the second quarter, and Sandell's kick tied it 7-7. Manning answered with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo at 10:09, and Spetic added a 23-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in the half. Texas went to the locker room up 17-7.

The Sooners chipped back. Sandell made a 53-yarder at 10:56 of the third quarter to cut it to 17-10. Lloyd Avant opened the fourth quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run at 14:48, tying the game at 17.

Then Peyton Bowen intercepted Manning and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown at 10:07, putting Oklahoma ahead 24-17. Manning responded with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Bishop Jr. at 6:32 to tie it 24-24. Sandell's 47-yard field goal at 0:00 decided it.

Manning finished 19 of 31 for 260 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Coleman caught five passes for 110 yards and a score, and Wingo had two catches for 57 yards. The Texas run game produced 122 yards, led by Derrek Cooper (8 carries, 41 yards) and Hollywood Smothers (12 carries, 39 yards).

John Mateer was 18 of 26 for 155 yards with no touchdowns and, more to the point, no interceptions. Avant ran 10 times for 72 yards and the touchdown. Isaiah Sategna III caught five passes for 64 yards and Rocky Beers had four for 29.

Neither offense moved the chains well. Oklahoma converted 2 of 13 third downs and had 14 first downs to Texas's 16. Possession was nearly even, 30:31 to 29:29 in Oklahoma's favor.

Against the number

Texas closed as a 7.5-point favorite, and Oklahoma covered by winning outright. The moneyline had Texas at -345 and Oklahoma at +275, so the market rated this as roughly a three-in-four game for the Longhorns.

The total closed at 40.5 and the teams combined for 51, an over. The two non-offensive Oklahoma touchdowns account for that margin and then some; on offensive scoring alone, the game would have stayed under. Full prices are on the game page.

What's next

Texas falls to 4-1. The loss comes after a run of close wins, 24-23 over Ohio State and 20-17 at Tennessee, and this one went the other way. The Longhorns play Florida on Saturday, October 17, on ABC.

Oklahoma moves to 3-2 after losing 41-13 at Georgia a week ago. The Sooners host No. 15 Kentucky on Saturday, October 17, on SEC Network.
