Oklahoma's John Mateer still has time to fix his legacy, starting with Kentucky

Oklahoma's John Mateer has a habit of late heroics and costly mistakes. The Sooners host No. 15 Kentucky with a banged-up offensive line.

John Mateer has had two very different seasons at Oklahoma, and the second half of his senior year will settle which one people remember. As The Sporting News laid out on Saturday, the former Washington State transfer can still finish as a respected part of the Sooners' quarterback tradition. Getting there depends on him cutting down mistakes, and on the people around him helping out.

The case for Mateer starts with big moments. Last season he ran in the winning touchdowns against Auburn and Tennessee, and he threw a 58-yard touchdown to Isaiah Sategna to beat LSU on a day he had already thrown three interceptions. This fall he hit Sategna for a 53-yard score that put New Mexico away, then connected with him twice late against No. 1 Texas to set up the winning field goal in a 27-24 upset.

The case against him is turnovers. He threw 11 interceptions and lost two fumbles in 2025 while playing through a broken bone in his right thumb. Five games into this season he has four interceptions and three lost fumbles, including a fourth-quarter pick in the 17-10 loss at Michigan. Cliff Brunt of The Sporting News argued that offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has to keep running the ball to slow opposing pass rushes. He wants more carries for running back Lloyd Avant after his breakout against Texas, designed runs for Mateer, and more targets for tight end Rocky Beers, who is second on the team with 22 catches for 284 yards. Brunt's view is that Mateer is unusual because he "gets better when he gets hit."

The catch is up front. Offensive linemen Michael Fasusi, Heath Ozaeta and Eddy Pierre-Louis are listed as doubtful for Saturday, per The Sporting News, though the Sooners managed to beat Texas while short-handed.

What it means against Kentucky

Oklahoma is 3-2 and has alternated wins and losses all season. The Sooners beat UTEP 51-0, lost 17-10 at Michigan, got past New Mexico 14-6, lost 41-13 at No. 2 Georgia and then beat Texas. The two losses came on the road against top opponents and featured Mateer's worst turnover games. The offense has scored 14 or fewer points in three of five games, so the defense has carried a heavy load. No. 15 Kentucky comes to Norman on Saturday, October 17, on SEC Network, and gives the Sooners a chance to string together wins for the first time this season.

The market still trusts Oklahoma despite the injuries up front. Across the 11 venues on this site's board, the Sooners are favored by 6.5 points. Novig has Oklahoma at -223 on the moneyline and -104 on the spread. Kentucky is +213 at Novig, and the best price anywhere is +215 at theScore Bet, so the venues sit close together on the outright. The spread is a little less settled. BetRivers has Kentucky at +7 for -122, compared with +6.5 at +102 on Novig. Sportsbook hold runs from 3.4% to 7.0% across the markets.

The total is 43.5, with Novig pricing the over at -104 and the under at -100. That number reflects a game expected to be decided by Oklahoma's defense and by whether Mateer can protect the ball behind a patched-together line.
